Together in Zion

Psalm 133

“Look, how good and pleasant it is for brothers to dwell together in unity.” - Psalm 133:1

The rash of killing of African Americans and police has flamed the racial divide. The murder of Marines serving in the supposed safety of their homeland heats anger against all Moslems, and the Middle East itself burns with war between Shiites and Sunnis. Psalm 133, the fourteenth of the fifteen Songs of Ascent, pictures Jewish pilgrims celebrating togetherness in Jerusalem and claims that the Lord’s blessing rests on the hills of Zion. This is where I have a big problem. Jerusalem today is one of the most divided cities in the world. It needs walls to keep Palestinians and Israelis from murdering each other. So much for any joyful, good family celebration in this Holy City!

This is the tension raised by this Psalm years before the ultimate Son of David came. But before we declare this vision of unity by these godly worshipers a hoax, we need to let the tension in the story lead us forward in God’s Story. It’s the hatred, disunity, and violence that Jesus faced in His own life that led to His death on a mountain outside the walls of Zion. This is the twist in the Story that the Apostle John sensed when he recorded Jesus’ words, “When I am lifted from the earth, I will draw all people to Myself.” (John 12:32).  We need to get the message of the cross to the world, and it is the most powerful message to solve racial, religious, and social divides. But the best is yet to come.

Revelation concludes God’s redemptive story with Jesus setting up His Kingdom here on earth based in Jerusalem. Then the nations will unite, not in New York, but in Zion. There they will gather in unity and celebrate His reign. Until then I’m going to pour out my energy pointing everyone I can to Calvary and the empty tomb.

It’s as if the dew of Hermon were falling on Mount Zion. For there the LORD bestows His blessing, even life forevermore.” - Psalm 133:3

LORD, keep using Truth Encounter to help folks to track Your Story. Open eyes and ears so that they can see how it climaxed at Calvary, was resolved in the resurrection, and continues as You chose not to end Your Story in the first century. We have a command from our King to carry out:  to spread His Good News to every nation. Help me help others to meet Jesus today, the One who can enable humans to live together.
