Steady Strong Hands

Psalm 138

The surgeon’s hands were steady and could depended upon for hours of surgery, but then age began to shake his world. The tremor was slight at first and didn’t affect his competency for long hours of surgery. Then they increased, and when his nurse handed him the scalpel as she had hundreds and hundreds of times and he dropped it, thankfully on the floor of the operating room, he knew it was time for the retirement party and a watch. Human hands-they are not strong enough to hold us and that’s why David in Psalm 138 concluded his Psalm with this confidence in God’s hands.

“Though I walk in the midst of narrowed options and stress, You give me life in spite of my enemies rage. You stretch out Your hand, and Your right hand delivers me. The LORD will carry out His purpose for me; Your covenant faithful love is forever. Do not relax the muscles in Your hand and drop me. Don’t forsake Your handiwork. “

LORD, it’s tough to see some of my friends who used to have the strongest, steadiest hands, now unable to hold a coffee cup steady. Help us together when the body becomes weak to trust in your steady firm grip knowing that You will never drop us.
