Teacher Accountability

Luke 12:47-48

Want a debate? Just mention accountability in education. Bring up the need for students to pass tests demonstrating that they have mastered a subject and evaluations for teachers giving evidence that they have actually taught, and you’ve got a hot argument in full swing.

When I took flight lessons, this entire issue of accountability took on an entirely different meaning. If my flight instructor failed to prepare me to solo and let me do it, the result was my death and the destruction of her office, her plane. In flight school and also in medical school where the issue is life and death, everyone knows there has to be accountability. Jesus agrees.

When it comes to giving spiritual instruction, it’s not just physical life that’s at stake. It’s eternal life, and Jesus, the One who will evaluate in the End, is serious about accountability.

“Now the servant who knows the will of his lord and doesn’t prepare or do his will, will be beaten with many blows. But the one who doesn’t know will be disciplined less severely. For everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to him who has been entrusted with much, even more will be asked of him.” Luke 12:47-48

LORD, help me not to let a day go by without listening to Your voice in the text of Your Word and then allowing Your Spirit to empower obedience. Help me not to forget that knowledge of Your Word is important, but knowledge has to be applied, and You will hold me accountable.
