Twelve Legions of Angels Sit Idle

Matthew 26:47-56

Realpolitik states that power and practical material factors rule the world. History seems to prove that this is the case. It’s the sword, the musket, and the AK47 that win in the end, but is this true?

As Judas kissed Jesus and the band from the High Priest, armed with swords and clubs, responded to his signal and seized Jesus, Matthew tells us that one of Jesus’ disciples drew his sword and lopped off the ear of the High Priest’s servant. If this was the climax of a John Wayne movie, this is when the Marshall would pull out his Colt, or Colts, and blow away all the bad guys. Something deep inside of me loves this kind of hero—the kind who takes out the traitor and then destroys his band of thugs. Many times I want to grab for my weapon, like Jesus’ disciple, but how did Jesus respond to his “John Wayne” follower?

“Then Jesus said to him, ‘Put your sword back in its place. For all those who take up the sword will die by the sword. Do you not realize that I could ask my Father now and He would put at my disposal twelve legions of angels? But how then should the Scriptures be fulfilled, that it must be so?” (Matthew 26:47-56)

The Scripture predicted that before the Messiah came with power to rule the world He would be the suffering servant who would die for the sins of the world. Today Jesus is challenging me by His example at His arrest to forgive my enemies. My King said something about this in His famous sermon on the mountain.

LORD, I won’t have a chance to tell my enemies about You and how Your death provided forgiveness if I draw my weapon and blow them away. As our neighborhoods become more and more violent, help me not to be afraid. Help me to remember that You still have more than twelve legions of angels at your disposal. You can protect me and help me to get out the message of forgiveness and grace.
