The Provider and Host

Luke 9:11-17

Early in the morning, Kenyan pastors road their bikes to the conferences we were conducting in the cities and towns. We taught the Word with only a brief break into the midafternoon. Then it was time to eat. After all, how could we expect our students to ride 28 kilometers back to their homes without some food in their stomachs, but how to come up with the money needed to purchase food for several hundred pastors?

This is exactly the situation that the disciples raised to Jesus when a far greater crowd, over five thousand, listened to Him teach into the late afternoon. It was time for the evening meal, yet almost a year’s salary would be needed to purchase enough provisions for this crowd. And in this remote area, how could anyone even find this much food? All the disciples had were five loaves of bread and two fish.

“When the crowd discovered where Jesus was, they followed Him. He welcomed them and was speaking to them about the Kingdom of God. Those who needed to be healed, He healed.

Now the when the day began to slip away, the Twelve came to Him and said, ‘Send the crowd away so that they can go in the nearby villages and country side and find places to stay and provisions because we are in a remote place.‘ Jesus responded, ‘You give them food to eat.‘ They said, ‘We only have five loaves and two fish –unless we go and buy food for this crowd. (For there were about five thousand men.) He said to His disciples, ’Have them sit down in groups of fifty.’ They did and everyone sat down. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, He looked up to heaven and blessed them. Then He divided the food and gave it to His disciples to distribute to the crowd. Everyone ate and was satisfied and they had more than twelve baskets left over.”- Luke 9:11-17

Like His Father providing the manna for millions of Israelites in the desert (Exodus 16) and God multiplying twenty loaves of barley bread and some grain so that Elisha could feed a hundred men (2 Kings 4:42-44), Jesus gave us more proof that He was the promised Messiah, the one who could not only provide our physical needs but meet all of our needs forever.

By the way, last year the Lord used you all to provide the meals for the pastors by your gifts to Truth Encounter. A true miracle for us as Mary and I found out just before we left that we needed to provide the funds to purchase the needed food.

LORD, thanks that You multiply the little that we have and use it to not only feed but to satisfy both physically and spiritually. Prepare hearts now for the ministry in Kenya this spring. Only You can break bread and satisfy hearts.
