Worried and Bothered

Luke 10:38-42

In the midst of stress Jesus is the One who can help us discover and get focused on what matters the most. In the conclusion of Luke 10 He goes to visit two of His best friends. Martha greets Him and then while she does all the work to prepare for the meal, Mary, her sister, just sits doing nothing at Jesus' feet. Talk about a potential sister conflict! Watch the heat build as the incident unfolds.

"Now while Jesus and His disciples traveled, He came into a village, and a woman named Martha welcomed Him as a guest. She had a sister named Mary who sat at His feet listening to His word. Martha, on the other hand, was becoming more and more overburdened by the preparations for the meal. Finally she couldn't take it any longer, 'Lord, don't You care that my sister Mary has left me alone to do all the serving? Tell her to help me!' The Lord answered, 'Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good portion which will not be taken away from her.'"   Luke 10:38-42

Jesus didn't stop Martha from using her gifted hands, but He didn't let her take away from Mary the rare opportunity of simply sitting and listening to Him teach. Simply sitting at Jesus' feet and listening to Him- it's the one thing I abandon quickly. For years in the pastorate, for example, the tasks would multiply—leadership meetings, counseling appointments, hospital visitation, elder-deacon meetings, funerals, weddings. Checking off all my "to do" list gave me great satisfaction. I could spend hours getting ready to preach to others but not spend time with Jesus listening to what He was saying to me.

Now as we devote ourselves full time to the ministry of Truth Encounter, my wife, Mary, and I are recommitting ourselves to following Mary's example in acting on the priority of listening to what Jesus is saying to us in His Word and what He wants us to do about what He tells us. In Truth Encounter we try to share with you some of what Jesus has told us in our personal times with Him and also help you to learn how to listen carefully to the Story Jesus is telling in every word of the Bible.

LORD, today help me to sit at your feet and listen to You. Help me not to be a hypocrite that challenges everyone else to do this, but does not do it myself.
