The Rulers and the Ruler

Luke 2:1-5

The world rulers arrive in their limousines. Their deputies prepare the papers and proclamations are made after the conference of the things they will do to solve earth's problems.

Augustus Caesar, when he commanded that a census needed to be taken of the Roman world, believed he was at the controls. You don't call yourself the "August One" for nothing. Quirinius, governing Palestine from Syria, commanded Caesar's decree to be carried out. Because these world powers strutted, Joseph had to take his pregnant wife near the end of her pregnancy from Nazareth to Bethlehem, the city of David.

But who actually was in control of the Story?

Eight hundred years earlier Micah, a Judean prophet, said the ultimate Ruler would be born not in Rome, not in Damascus, not even in Jerusalem. Dr. Luke doesn't want us to miss the fact that in God's redemptive story the Messiah had to be born in Bethlehem. So he wrote,

"So it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the inhabited world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. So all had to go to be registered, each one to their own city. That's why Joseph of Nazareth in Galilee also got up and went to Judea to the City of David called Bethlehem. Joseph had to do this because he was of the House and line of David. Mary, his betrothed, went with him and she was near the end of her pregnancy." Luke 2:1-5

LORD, help me to rest in the fact that You are the One who writes the Story. Caesar and Quirinius strut, but You are just bringing your pregnant virgin to the only city that is right for the birth of the Messiah. Help me rest in the fact that You even control where and when the birth pains intensify.
