Steady, Don’t Slip

Proverbs 3:21-26

When my sons and I hiked up Haystack in the Adirondacks, we had to cross over Johns Brook. When I was eighteen taking campers from Word of Life Island up this trail, I didn’t even think about jumping from boulder to boulder, paid no attention to the rushing water, and hardly remembered the river as an obstacle. This time it was a different story. In fact, both coming and going I had to swallow my pride, take off my backpack, hand it over, and then let Josh, my youngest, give me a hand so that I landed safely on the boulder close to the other side.  Now it’s hard for a dad to admit that he’s now the one who needs the help, but the reality is that I’ve always needed a helping, steadying hand.

“My son, don’t let sound judgment and discretion out of your sight, guard them. They will be life to your soul and favor around your neck. Then you will walk securely in your life journey. Your foot will not be injured on a stone. When you lie down, you will not be afraid. When you go to sleep, your sleep will be sweet. You won’t be afraid of any sudden terror—the ruin that comes upon the wicked. For the LORD will be your trust. He will guard your foot from the snare.” - Proverbs 3:21-26

LORD, trying to make my way on the wet, slippery, cold rocks, I needed my sons’ help more than the couple times we crossed the river. Thanks that Your hand is always stretched out to make the jumps in life easier and safer. Mary and I especially need your steadying, we trust You to help us not to slip up. Thanks that Your Son has us both by the hand, and that we know where He is taking us in the end.
