The Gang

Proverbs 1:10-14

Whether it’s Bonnie and Clyde in the early 30’s in the southwest or Whitey Bulger in Boston in the 1970s and ‘80s, there’s something seductive about a gang committed to blood and fear, and our kids don’t need to be raised in West Dallas, South Boston, or on the streets of Baltimore to have to deal with the threat of murder. I pastored for forty years in Midlothian. It was a small town that still boasts one of the best Ag programs in all of Texas, yet some of our young people were pulled into a life of murder and death. George Raffield, an undercover police officer in our high school, was found face down in a field south of down town in the fall of 1987. Richard Goeglein (17) and Greg Knighten (16) were found guilty of the crime. Just this spring Missy Bevers, a fitness Camp Gladiator trainer, was murdered in the early morning hours in Creekside Church of Christ.

How did fathers in Solomon’s day try to protect their kids from a life of crime? They used roleplay to spell out exactly how a gang leader will come on to a young teen.

“My son if criminals entice you, don’t give in. If they say, ‘Come with us, let’s lie in wait for blood, lie in wait for the unsuspecting and innocent for no reason. Let’s swallow them alive like Death, and the blameless like those who descend into the grave’s pit. We’ll find all kinds of precious treasure. We’ll fill our houses with loot.  Throw in your lot with us.  We’ll all have one money bag.’” - Proverbs 1:10-14

LORD, thanks that You told the truth about murder from the very start of Your Story as You exposed Cain’s murder of Abel and how this escalated to the wholesale violence that necessitated the flood. Raise up godly dads and granddads who will have the courage to show the younger generation the juicy lies crime always uses to capture its prey.
