Devotionals Daily: A Year with Jesus

From Wisdom for Each Day by Billy Graham

Perfection Lost

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.

-Genesis 1:31

I could hear the puzzlement in her question: “Why would God say the world is good, when so much of it is obviously imperfect or even evil?”

After God created the world, He said it was perfect, because He had made it exactly the way He had wanted it to be. But notice: He pronounced His creation “very good” before Satan tempted Adam and Eve, and before the world was invaded by sin.

The world was indeed a perfect place—before Adam and Eve chose to believe Satan’s lies instead of God’s truth. Adam and Eve had everything they needed, and they walked in perfect harmony with God—until they turned their backs on Him. Suddenly sin—like a deadly cancer—took root in the human heart, and even the plants and animals became ravaged by sin and death.

The Bible tells us, however, that this sin-sick, fallen world won’t last forever. At the end of time God will intervene, and the new heaven and new earth He will create will be free from all evil and pain. Come quickly, Lord Jesus!
