What Do You Want?
By Michelle S. Lazurek

For everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened. Which of you, if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!  Matthew 7:8-11 NIV

What do you want?

A speaker at a recent conference posed the question while speaking on the topic of God sized dreams. She asked,

What are your dreams?

After reflecting on this question, I came up with my answer:

I had forgotten how to dream.

Many times throughout my life, I dreamed big. Because those dreams were not in God’s will, He closed the door on them. After many years of forcing those doors open, I squashed my dreams.

One such dream came in choosing my professional career. Because I had a heart to help the wounded and broken, I believed I was supposed to pursue a counseling career.  One day, after searching endlessly for a job in my field, a fellow church member said,

I’ve done counseling for over twenty years. I have some advice for you. If you can do anything other than counseling, do that instead.

I was crushed. God said no to my dreams.

Or did He?

Over time, I felt called to pursue another interest of mine:  writing. I realized that God had not killed my dream to counsel but remolded and reshaped it into something more amazing than I could have ever imagined.

What are your God sized dreams?

Here are some suggestions for you to discover the dreams God may envision for your life:

●      Take a moment and brainstorm your “God sized dreams.”

●      Fold a piece of paper in half and list “small dreams” in one column and “God sized dreams” in the other.

●      Jot down whatever comes to mind.

●      Find someone whom you trust to speak your dream into being.

●      Ask them to pray with and for you regarding these dreams.

●      Act! Dreams don’t become reality by merely wishing them to come true. We often need to take the necessary steps to make our dreams a reality.

God wants to bless you with good gifts. He just wants you to ask Him for them.

Lord, help us to never stop dreaming. Reveal Your dreams to us. Give us boldness to embrace those dreams and speak our dreams into reality. Provide people to help us keep accountable to these dreams. Amen.
