A Free Gift

For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

During my college years, I worked at a factory in the summer months. Bright and early each morning we stood in line by a cabinet that held our time cards. At 7:00 a.m., we filed past a time clock and "punched" in. We never had to punch out, unless we left early. On pay day, we received the wages we had earned.

One day there will be a spiritual payday. Every person will receive his earnings. Scripture is clear that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. The payment for that sin will be death. Not just physical death; we will all experience that. Scripture speaks of death as an eternal separation from God; what Jesus refers to as hell.

In contrast to the deserved wages of sin, God offers a gift. This gift is not deserved and cannot be earned. The wages for our sin has been paid in full by Jesus' death on the cross. It cost Him everything. It costs us nothing. So hold out your hands and receive the gracious offering of God. Believe me, in this case, you don't want what you deserve.

Father, thank You for the free gift of salvation found in Jesus Christ alone. Thank You that Jesus has done for us what we could not do for ourselves. Thank You that in Jesus we can exchange death for life. In His name. Amen.
