A Bold Request

When they had crossed, Elijah said to Elisha, "Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?" "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit," Elisha replied.  2 Kings 2:9

Think teacher/student, coach/player, mentor/mentee. That was the relationship between these two prophets. Elisha was privileged to serve and learn from the great prophet, Elijah. But then God scheduled a day to take Elijah to heaven--one of the few who went directly to heaven without experiencing death.

Before the chariots of fire came to take Elijah away, the teacher asked his student, "Tell me, what can I do for you before I am taken from you?" Elisha's response is one of the most bold and instructive requests in the Bible. Speaking to the powerful prophet, he requested twice as much strength and power as Elijah had. Elisha said, "Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit." And God granted the request.

When Jesus was taken into heaven, He promised to send the Holy Spirit. When we trust in Jesus, the Spirit makes His home in our hearts. Be assured the moment that we believe, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit in full. But how bold would it be to make a request like Elisha's? Let's do that right now!

Lord Jesus, I know that Your Spirit lives within me in His fullness. But today I pray that You will help me feel His presence like never before. Today I pray that You will help me experience twice as much strength, peace, and resurrection power. Give me a "double portion" of all I need to do what You have called me to do. In Your name. Amen.
