A New Creation

2 Corinthians 5:17

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!

OK, let's have a heart-to-heart. Our passage today proclaims a truth too important to brush over. Paul says that an encounter with Jesus changes things. Jesus transforms us into "a new creation." This makeover shows up on the inside (attitudes, thinking, emotions, passions, desires) and the outside (direction, goals, mission, use of time, gifts and money). Old ways of thinking and doing are gone. A new day comes to our lives.

So, here's my question: Is the "old" gone and has the "new" come? Have you experienced true spiritual transformation? Let's face it; there are many who proclaim to be Christ-followers but, quite honestly, don't live any differently than their neighbor across the street who hasn't had any serious thoughts about God in the past year.

You cannot "receive Jesus" and stay on the same worn out path. You cannot "trust in Jesus" and keep trusting in yourself. You cannot "ask him to come into your life" and keep filling your life with all temporal stuff. You cannot "accept him into your heart" and remain spiritually flatlined. An encounter with Jesus changes things. That's the hard truth that each of us must use to evaluate our hearts. Has there been any change?

Lord, search and examine our hearts. Give us the self-honesty to deal with the results. In Jesus' name. Amen.
