When Words are Many

Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues.  Proverbs 10:19

Today's verse is a warning to the person who talks too much. Like Old Man River, their mouth just keep on flowing along. The talker never met a silent moment they couldn't fill, a life experience they couldn't share, a story they couldn't top. Never mind if you've heard the story before; they'll tell it again. Never mind if the repeated story changes; they've got to keep it interesting. Never mind if they have to add some assumptions or presumptions; they are on a roll. Grab a cup of coffee. Get comfortable. You won't have to add anything to the conversation ... um, sorry, monologue. Just pretend that you're listening. Just nod every once in a while. Smile. Appropriately furrow your brow. It's like throwing gasoline on a fire! Watch the talker go!

The problem with the talker? Sooner or later, they tell a story that wasn't meant to be shared. They drop a name that never wanted to go public. They take a "just between you and me" and make it headline news. Leaving people scratching their heads, they contradict themselves, exaggerate or just embellish the facts a bit. They say some things that cause regret and many things they can't remember. You see, "sin is not ended by multiplying words." The more you talk, the more the potential for sin.

The remedy? Zip it! Weigh your words. Hold your tongue. Think before you speak. That simple exercise is going to keep you from a lot of sin and regret.

Father, please help us to hold our tongues today. Keep gossip far from us. Help us not to share the things we should keep to ourselves. In Jesus' name. Amen.
