VITAL SIGNS: Unity is founded in the message of the Cross | Romans 1:16-17 | Devotional
I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile. For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."
In the heart of every vibrant church is the message of the cross—not a cross, but the message of the cross. Many churches have big crosses hanging in visible places; sometimes Jesus is still hanging on them. But that symbol does not make a church vibrant. It is the spoken and lived-out message that the symbol represents. A loving Father. An obedient Son. A death for the penalty of sin. A resurrection.
In the heart of every vibrant Christian is the message of the cross—not a cross hanging around one’s neck (sometimes with Jesus hanging on it). It’s the message of the cross that is the power of God for salvation. It is what happened on the cross two thousand years ago that still transforms the heart and changes the direction of one’s life.
In a world of symbols, don’t miss real substance. The message of the cross is the power of God. Don’t think that message is conveyed with fashionable jewelry. The message must be shared and lived out. Otherwise, people may wonder if we are ashamed of what we claim to possess.
Father, give me one opportunity today to prove I am not ashamed to share the message of Jesus. In His Name, Amen.
