God, Where are You When My World is Shaken? | Psalm 139:1-4
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm. O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.
Let’s start today talking about feelings—the emotion of life. Love is just a concept, until we personally “feel” weird things taking place in our heart. Anger is only a word until we “feel” our blood pumping and face reddening. Sadness is simply a theory until we “feel” a physical heaviness and tears in our eyes. And on and on it goes…pride, joy, contentment, discontentment, discouragement, passion, etc. etc. Feelings are the experience of life. But…feelings can come and go. Lori and I have been married for 28 years and “in love” a few years before that. But in those years we have “felt” more “in love” during some times than other times. Does that mean there were times we didn’t love each other? No! It means that there are times we don’t experience the feelings as much as other times.
So here’s my point. Sometimes I feel God’s love, His presence, His strength, His peace. And sometimes I don’t. But my “time and place” feelings don’t change the eternal truth. Regardless of how I feel, God is always present with me. He knows when I sit down and when I get up (and everything I do in between). He knows my thoughts before I think them and my words before I say them. He is “familiar with all my ways.”
I don’t know how you feel today. Your emotions may be steaming, simmering, or stagnant. You may be laughing or crying. You may be filled with courage or fear. You may be facing the next hour of your day with “can’t wait” anticipation or dread. But regardless of how you feel, the eternal God who loves you with an everlasting love is right there with you--His blood purchased child. Don’t discount your feelings; but don’t allow your feelings to discount God.
Father, speak to me through my feelings. Use them to bless me. Use them to warn me. But never let my feelings override the eternal truth of your presence with me. In Christ’s Name. Amen.
