WHEN FEAR RUNS WILD
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore we will
not fear, though the earth should change, and though the mountains slip into
the heart of the sea. Psalm 46:1-2
Hurricane Ike has brought with it MUCH devastation to millions of people. The horrific situation on Wall Street has greatly weakened the financial stability of America. The threat of terrorism from Islamic extremists continues to plague our country and the world. Many look at the present social, political, and economic landscape and are gripped with fear. Is that true of you?
We are not facing anything that has not been faced before. God's Old Testament people had many times in history when things were black and bleak. On more than one occasion, they faced starvation, devastation and pending extermination. Yet God was still the unseen King, seated on His throne and in charge of everything. And even though the people of God were so often straying from Him, God still loved them, cared for them and responded to their repentance and their prayers.
So it is with us. While the world may be filled with fear over natural disasters, economic collapse, and unbridled crime and corruption, God's people can have perfect peace. Our hope is not in the stock market, or in our jobs, or in our political party. Our hope is in God. He never changes... He never has a recession... He never loses His power... He never is at a loss as to what to do... And He never stops loving and caring for us.
Are you fearful today? Has trouble descended come upon you and your family like a hurricane? God is abundantly available to help you in your time of trouble. Regardless of what terrible circumstances may be blowing all around you this day, you can choose to get your eyes off your problems and on the problem solver.
Trust God. He "is able to do exceeding abundantly beyond all that we ask or think" (Eph. 3:20). While difficult times are indeed a part of these last days, God's people do not need to fear. "The Lord of Hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold" (Ps. 46:11).
