See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many (Hebrews 12:15).

We keep a record of wrongs, every harsh thing anyone has said to us, and every injustice we have ever experienced. It’s what sin, the flesh and the world dictate us to do. We can pull these lists up at any time and use them against others. These lists are so detailed, we can recount an argument that happened years ago almost word for word.

We keep these lists because at some point we want to even the score, or even worse, we want to get ahead in the tally.

And it’s not just the wrongs of others. We record all the wrong things that we have thought, said or done. When something bad happens to us, we judge it to be God evening the score, getting us back for something we’ve done in the past. This is just how natural man operates.

Here is how it works. People can and do hurt us and hurt us deeply. The sad thing is that we do the same to others. When we get hurt by the actions of others, we keep a record of the event in vivid detail. We know the who, what, when, and how, and we give a lot of brain time to figuring out the why. All this opens the door for resentment to creep in and set up shop in our minds.

The writer of Hebrews issued this warning with regard to resentment and bitterness: “See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many” (Hebrews 12:15). Resentment is not content to merely stew. It wants to cause trouble. All kinds of evil thoughts begin racing through the mind, hatching a plan for revenge. That is the way our minds work when bitterness takes hold.

Evil acts toward others don’t just happen. They begin in the mind. In God’s mind, however, there is no evil. He is love. As James wrote, God cannot be tempted with evil, nor does he tempt anyone with evil. No, “each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed” (James 1:14). God is the source of all that is good in our lives. Every good and perfect gift comes from him. Forgiveness of sins is one of those good and perfect gifts.

John wrote this: “I write to you, dear children, because your sins have been forgiven on account of his name” (1 John 2:12). Did you know that you are a forgiven person in Christ? God reconciled you to himself in Christ. He does not count your sins against you (2 Corinthians 5:19). Whenever you sin, God is not resentful, nor does he think evil. And that sin doesn’t get recorded in God’s spreadsheet. God’s spreadsheet is empty. He does not keep a record of your wrongs.

God isn’t thinking about all the things you did wrong yesterday or today. Jesus died for all your sins once and for all. In this New Covenant, he chooses to remember them no more. That’s good news. Let this love tear up all the lists you have of the wrongs you have suffered. It will do your relationships good. Love thinks no evil; love keeps no records of wrongs.
