In His Grip Devotions

Memories and Fleeting Time

As I write this little devotional several of our 14 grandkids are swimming in our above ground pool that was first erected in 1977. My wife, Sharon, posted on Facebook her nostalgic memories as she watched the kids in the pool. She recollected all of the children, now adults who swam in that pool over the years after softball games, picnics, barbecues, special events and holidays. Then others started posting their mémoires, some of which we had forgotten that added to the video replay of years gone by.

Have you ever noticed how fast the years seem to go by the older you become? I fully realize that there are still 24 hours in every day and 365 days in every year just as there were when I was a kid. But time truly does seem to march on at a faster pace now that I am so much older. This drives home the point that every day is precious and will never be recovered again. As the images are created every day and then slip by they are then gone forever. It is only when those memories are all one has left that one is brought face to face with this question. “Did I really appreciate what happened?”

Sometimes we need to take a spiritual timeout from the tyranny of the urgent and take it all in. Right now I am looking out the window and watching six grandkids entangled around each other with their heads bobbing up and down as they whiz by in a child-generated whirlpool. They are laughing and screaming at the pleasure this has generated for them. In a moment it will be over and that will become just a memory.

There is a spiritual nostalgia that the Bible speaks of when it says,

“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness, you who seek the LORD: look to the rock from which you were hewn, and to the quarry from which you were dug.(Isaiah 51:1 ESV)

Do you remember what it was like when you first trusted Christ? Do you remember the sense of urgency to tell others of God’s amazing love? Do you remember your hunger for the Word? Do you remember your love for His church? Is that first still brightly burning? Has the flame of God’s grace been reduced to a tiny ember? Have the weary bones gone dry? Chris Tomlin seems to have captured the essence of spiritual amnesia in his amazing song, Awake my Soul. May the words bless you the way they blessed me, but even better, google the song and watch it on YouTube. The music will help your heart soar as you walk through your day.

Chris Tomlin:
Breathe on me, breath of God, breathe on me
Breathe on me, breath of God, breathe on me
I come alive, I'm alive when you breathe on me
I come alive, I'm alive when you breathe on me

Chorus:
Awake, awake, awake my soul,
God resurrect these bones
From death to life, for you alone
Awake my soul

Speak to me, word of God, speak to me
Speak to me, word of God, speak to me
I come alive, I’m alive when you speak to me
I come alive, I’m alive when you speak to me

Lecrae:
Then He said to me,
Prophesy to these bones and say to them,
Dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!
This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones,
I will make breath into you,
And you will come to life.
So I prophesied as I was commanded.
As I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound,
And the bones came together, bone to bone.
And I looked, and tendons and the flesh appeared on them,
And skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
Then He said to me,
Prophesy to the breath,
Prophesy, son of man, and say to it,
Come from four winds, oh breath, and breathe.

Chorus:
Awake, awake, awake my soul,
God resurrect these bones
From death to life, for you alone
Awake my soul

Awake, awake, awake my soul,
God resurrect these bones
From death to life, for you alone
Awake my soul

Lecrae:
Yeah, I’m not alone, I realize
I breathe out, I come alive
Your word gives life to my dry bones
Your breath tells death it can ride on
Awake me, make me a living stone,
A testament to your throne, I
I’m nothing without you, I’m on my own
The only one who satisfies my soul

In His Grip,
Dr. Chuck F. Betters
