Congressman Bright - Almost!

Commit your work to the LORD, and then your plans will succeed (Proverbs 16:3).

Dear friends:

How wonderful it is to know that God is in charge of my life and not I!  He is all love, all wisdom, all knowledge, and all power.  He knows what is best for all of us.  He not only created over 100 billion galaxies but He created man in His own image.

I could have easily gone another direction.

My father was a rancher and also chairman of the popular Republican Party in Northeast Oklahoma, and he would often ask me, a high school teenager, to introduce candidates for the Senate, the Congress, or the office of Governor.

Politics got in my blood.   As a matter of fact, one of the dreams I had, which obviously wasn't God's dream, was that when I graduated from college and law school I would run for Congress.

The vision was that I would be a congressman, have my own ranch, and because of my interest in journalism, I would also publish a weekly newspaper, because there were no local newspapers in our community.  I could not imagine any more exciting life than being a rancher, being a congressman and having my own newspaper.

The interesting thing is that the man against whom I would have run was a good friend.  He was Democrat and I was Republican, and he was running in a Republican district.  My chances of being elected would have been very high, almost certain, in light of the influence of my father and the fact that people in that community and district were mostly Republicans.

But, obviously, and thankfully, God had other plans.  The war changed my plans, but my friend went on to become a congressman and was in the Congress for 20 years.  Public office is an honorable and worthy investment for any person of principle and integrity.

But had not God intervened, I would have spent my life missing His best, unable to serve Him as I have to help
fulfill the Great Commission.

Father always knows best.  He says, "For I know the plans I have for you... They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope." (Jeremiah 29:11, NLT).

Had I gone my own way, even if appearing attractive, it could have been a total disaster for me.  Instead, He gave me a future and a hope, just as He promised.

Are you struggling about your life's direction?  Your answer is in Proverbs 3:5-6: "Trust in the LORD with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding.  Seek his will in all you do, and he will direct your paths"(NLT).

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
