Encounter With A Stranger

What joy for the nation whose God is the Lord (Psalm 33:12, NLT).

Dear friends:

Some time ago, I had the most fascinating encounter.

On an airplane en route from Los Angeles to Orlando, I was seated next to a stranger. He was lamenting about what is happening to our nation -- the skyrocketing drug use, widespread crime, rampant immorality, unwise judicial decisions, and national political infighting.

I listened for a few minutes, then asked, "Would you like to know why we are having these problems?"

He looked surprised, and replied, "Do you know why?"

"Yes, I do," I said. "Here, read this." I handed him my Bible and directed him to Deuteronomy chapters 8 and 28, which describe God's promise of blessings on Israel if they obeyed Him, or curses if they disobeyed Him. These universal principles applied not only to Israel then, but to all nations today, including America.

He read it. Then he read it again. He seemed deeply moved, as though a light had come on in his understanding. Finally, he said soberly, "Now I understand," as he handed the Bible back to me.

God's Word had suddenly brought light to that man's mind.  "The entrance of thy words giveth light" (Psalm 19:130, KJV).  The whole world needs similar exposure to God's words and His truths.

My dear friends, please read the above-mentioned passages from Deuteronomy as well as God's promise to King Solomon recorded in 2 Chronicles 7, verse 14: "If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land" (NLT).

Note that God said, "if my people..."  He did not say if the people of the world, the television networks, Hollywood, or anyone else -- just "my people."  The people of God, as containers of the Holy Spirit, have tremendous power available to them if they will act in obedience and faith.

There are blessings when a nation turns to the living God, and chastening when a nation turns away from Him.  "Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD" (Psalm 33:12, NIV).

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,

Bill Bright
