Lesson From A Burglary - September 14

Lesson From A Burglary
Store your treasures in heaven, where they will . . . be safe from thieves (Matthew 6:20).
Dear friends:
John and his family returned from a family vacation to discover that burglars had invaded their home.
Drawers, cupboards and closets had been ransacked, appliances moved, and the basement door stood open.  Gone was the feeling of "welcome home."  Instead there was a sinking sensation of loss as John and his family sadly counted all that had been stolen or damaged.
When John called his insurance agent, he learned that his policy would replace things like his clock radio, telephone answering machine and television.  But there was no coverage for many priceless personal items, such as college rings, stamp and coin collections and baby spoons.
The burglary incident caused John to seriously reevaluate the priorities in his life, and what is really important.  It helped him to see the relative unimportance of material "things."
And it made him question the legacy he would leave his children.  What would his children value as adults? he wondered.  Would they place importance on things or would they treasure the riches of the Christian faith throughout their lives?
The most precious legacy we can leave our children is faith in and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Nothing else is important by comparison.  Many very poor but faithful parents have left this rich legacy for their children.  By contrast, and sadly, many very wealthy parents have left their children a legacy of spiritual poverty.
Jesus said, "Don't store up treasures here on earth, where they can be eaten by moths and get rusty, and where thieves break in and steal.  Store your treasures in heaven, where they will never become moth-eaten or rusty and where they will be safe from thieves.  Wherever your treasure is, there your heart and thoughts will also be" (Matthew 6:19-21, NLT).
Our spiritual treasure will also be the legacy for our children.
Proverbs also speaks of treasure: "My child, listen to me and treasure my instructions. Tune your ears to wisdom, and concentrate on understanding. Cry out for insight and understanding. Search for them as you would for lost money or hidden treasure. Then you will understand what it means to fear the LORD, and you will gain knowledge of God. For the LORD grants wisdom! From his mouth come knowledge and understanding. He grants a treasure of good sense to the godly. He is their shield, protecting those who walk with integrity. He guards the paths of justice and protects those who are faithful to him" (2:1-8, NLT).

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
