The Wicked Grandfather

And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will be given what you ask for (Luke 11:9).

Dear friends:

The story is told of an 82-year-old grandfather who was a wicked man all his life.

His saintly wife prayed for him for many years, with apparently no hope of his ever coming to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Yet because of her faithful prayers, and because she trusted God's promises and believed that He would do the impossible, her husband, the grandfather, received Christ in the twilight years of his life and died with the name of Jesus on his lips.

Do you know someone who needs the Lord Jesus, but, like this 82-year-old grandfather, he or she seems to be an impossible case?  Do you feel overwhelmed with the burden you are carrying for your loved one?  Does it appear to you that there is no hope?  Well, I can tell you: Do not give up.

I know from experience.  In my book, Witnessing Without Fear, I tell the story of how I prayed several years for my fiancie, Vonette Zachary, to receive Christ.  When I proposed and we became engaged, I just knew she was God's woman for me.  She had been very active in the church from her youth, and I assumed that she was a Christian.  As time passed, however, I realized that Vonette had not given her life to the Lord.  So I prayed, and I prayed some more.  Doubts grew and I began to wonder if God had really wanted me to marry this attractive young woman who refused to accept Jesus Christ as her Savior and Lord.

Then one fall day at a Christian retreat, Vonette surrendered her life to Jesus.  My prayers were answered, and we have since spent over 54 years together in a wonderful, Christ-centered marriage.

So I can identify with you if you have been praying for a son, daughter, spouse, or friend and have not yet seen results.  And I'm here to tell you: Do not be discouraged!

Trust in God's timing.  Although I wanted Vonette to receive Christ right away, God chose to wait three years, a different timetable -- but one that brought greater glory to Himself.  He is sovereign, and will answer your prayer in His special way, at His special time.

Yours for fulfilling the Great Commission each year until our Lord returns,
Bill Bright
