A Lesson in Empathy

My wife, Kathy, had a relational problem that caused her to feel trapped and scared. One night she needed empathy, and I failed her.
Before bed, Kathy prayed that God would teach me empathy. Later that night, I had a nightmare. I woke up screaming, feeling trapped and scared. I needed to know someone was with me, but when I reached for Kathy’s hand, she rebuffed me.
In that moment, I got it. I didn’t need anything fixed, and I didn’t need words, I needed someone to stand beside me.
Psalm 69:19 teaches, “Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none.”
Just as the Psalmist, Kathy, and I learned, we all need some empathy eventually.
