Pay Envy
By: Rick Boxx
November 13, 2014

A partner in a public accounting firm shared with me his latest challenge. His tenured accounting managers were grumbling about making less than the newer recently hired managers.

As firms grow they sometimes hire outside people at a higher pay amount than what existing staff might be making. This can stir up envy.

In Matthew 20, Jesus shared about a man who hired laborers throughout the day. This man paid each what was agreed, regardless of how many hours they worked. When some workers complained, the man said, “Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?”

Employers can determine how much to pay for a job, but if the overall payscale doesn’t remain competitive, don’t be surprised when they leave.
