Today's Scripture

"Moderation is better than muscle, self-control better than political power. Make your motions and cast your votes, but God has the final say." - Proverbs 16:32-33 MSG

Thoughts for Today

Holiness and pleasure can coexist. "For the Kingdom of God is not a matter of what we eat or drink, but of living a life of goodness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17 NLT). But we need to view pleasure through God's eyes and invite him into every area of life, including the fun times.

How do we improve the ways we view and pursue pleasure? One answer is in today's scripture: through practicing moderation and self-control.

Consider this …

Consider how you can, with God's help, exert more moderation and self-control around your views and pursuits of pleasure. Pray about it and allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.

God wants you to have an abundant life. Jesus came to make the way. But any pleasure you pursue that ignores Jesus and the guidelines in his Word will be shallow and short-lived compared with the joy Jesus provides. Seek him first and find the truly abundant life!

Prayer

Heavenly Father, Help me learn that ungodly fun is empty and godly fun is the best. Thank you that joy in you is my strength. Help me and others I know encourage one another in holy laughter and fun and enjoy the freedom and peace in Christ we have when we pursue pleasure with you in our midst. In Jesus' name …

These thoughts were drawn from …Where is the Image of God in You? by Brad Rymer. The purpose of this study is for us to see how some of the different character traits we have can be used in constructive rather than destructive ways in our lives and relationships so that we are operating more and more in the image of God according to the way He created us. Also, this study can help us better understand others as we build godly relationships. Note: This curriculum was written especially for small groups, and we encourage people to use it that way. However, it can also be used effectively as a personal study for individuals or couples.
