God’s Only Agenda

5Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,7but made himself nothing, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. —Philippians 2:5-11

God’s agenda is the exaltation of Christ. The only reason why this world keeps turning, the sun is in an orbit, and we’re locked in this tiny corner of a small solar system in a minor galaxy, part of millions of galaxies, is for the exaltation of Jesus Christ. And that’s why you’re still here, too.

You say, “I need some Scripture.” Romans 15:7 says, “Therefore, welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.” Romans 16:27 confirms this and Paul goes on to say in 2 Corinthians 4:6, “For God, who said, ‘Let light to shine out of darkness,’ has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.”

God Almighty, who created the universe, intends to exalt His Son. It’s gonna happen. He is seeking to spread the fame of the name of Jesus Christ. God’s got one flag He’s trying to raise to the top of the highest pole in the most prominent place where every human on the face of the earth can see it. And on the flag is Jesus Christ the Lord. That is God’s heart. And if we want to know fullness of joy and begin to track with the reason for which we were created, we will throw down our agenda and pick up God’s—living for the exaltation of Christ. Ephesians 3:21 says, “To him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.”

Today’s Scripture, Philippians 2:5-11 above, tells the whole story. The passage is phenomenal. You need some verses to memorize? Here’s a great one. Verses 5-8 describe the mind of Jesus we should have, learning obedience. But is that the end of the story? No. Verses 9-11 describe God’s ultimate agenda, leading up to the moment when “ . . . at the name of Jesus every knee should bow . . . and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” That’s God’s agenda in this world, the exaltation of Jesus Christ. —James MacDonald

Journal:

·         In what ways does my life demonstrate my efforts to live for the exaltation of Jesus Christ?

Prayer - Father, may Your Son be ever more exalted in my life. May Your Spirit constantly remind me that no decision or action should see the light of my days that doesn’t seek to bring fame to the name of Jesus. I realize it is Your desire to do this in my life, Father, and I long to give you my persistent permission. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
