Because You Asked

Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father . . .At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night, and God said, “Ask what I shall give you.” And Solomon said, “You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant David my father, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward you. And you have kept for him this great and steadfast love and have given him a son to sit on his throne this day. And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child. I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of your people whom you have chosen, a great people, too many to be numbered or counted for multitude. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” — 1 Kings 3:3-9

Are you facing a decision or a dilemma right now for which you need a word from God? You’ve done all you know to do and still it keeps you up at night. In times like these, what we need is wisdom.

No doubt we can all identify with Solomon, the third king of Israel. This young man felt completely overwhelmed with the weight of leading God’s people. On his face he cried out to God, “Give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people, that I may discern between good and evil, for who is able to govern this your great people?” (1 Kings 3:9). Hear the desperation in his words? God answered Solomon in an amazing way. He said, “I’m gonna give you one wish. Ask for anything you want.”

Think of all the things Solomon could have wished for: a long life, riches, peace, the death of his enemies. Instead, he asked God for a “wise and discerning heart” (NIV). God was so pleased with his request that He not only made Solomon the wisest man who ever lived, but he gave him all that other stuff, too.

Wouldn’t you love to meet Solomon for coffee and draw some wisdom from him? Well, you can—it’s called the book of Proverbs. Almost everything in Proverbs is something wise God gave to Solomon and that he wrote down. Proverbs is a loose collection of sayings that illustrate how the answer to foolishness is wisdom.

Wisdom is not stuff I know, wisdom is what I do.No wonder the subjects in Proverbs cover the gamut—my home, job, time, money, relationships, what to do in conflict, what to do when under pressure, what to do in good times, what to do when my head is spinning or my heart is broken.

God promises to give you all the wisdom you need if you soak yourself in His Book. If you get God’s wisdom going in your life, you’ll get some serious results. You’ll be blessed, encouraged, and you’ll grow up.

Solomon learned the truth of the ages. God help us also to wise up to the truth of Proverbs 8:11, “For wisdom is better than jewels; and all that you may desire cannot  compare with her.” — James MacDonald

Prayer – Father, more than anything else, I want to be wise. Give me a heart of understanding for every challenge that I’m facing. Bring to mind any wisdom that I have learned from Your Book, and lead me to any wisdom that I am lacking. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
