Future Grace

10But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. 11Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, 12waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set on fire and dissolved, and the heavenly bodies will melt as they burn!
— 2 Peter 3:10-12

I am blown away by the expanse of creation. I read that in the Milky Way alone there are 100 thousand million stars, and on top of that astronomical number there are millions upon millions of galaxies. Today the Hubble Space Telescope can look into the expanse of the universe as far as 10-15 billion light years. Since light has a speed of 186,000 miles per second, and 5,865,696,000,000 miles in just one year, humans have seen things no man ever has. But think about this. There is still more, and God created it!

Psalm 19:1 says, The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”I live at the base of the Sierra Nevada that overlooks Lake Tahoe and see this every morning. But what is He going to do with it? He is going to destroy all of it. Every molecule in the universe will be incinerated by the hand of Almighty God and the enemy and his regime of evil will be thrown in the lake of fire and all will be reconciled to him.

But be of good cheer Christian, because of God’s grace, you will remain. Why? Because He loves the one looking in the telescope! His all-consuming love for you is displayed in His future destruction of the universe, for He is doing this to create a new heaven and new earth for His throne and your eternal home!

When we live in light of this future grace we are yet to see, we have to answer Peter’s question: What sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness? The answer is in the question; we are to be holy and godly people! We are to crave righteousness and long to resemble the likeness of our Savior. When we know every earthly power, fame, or privilege will be destroyed and that we will remain, it brings great light to what is useless, what matters, and what we were created for: worship!

When we gaze into the heavenlies and see the expanse of the universe, as it declares the glory of God, remember the Creator loves you more than all of it. He declared this when He sent His Son for you! May this drive you to look at creation and present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship” (Romans 12:1).—John Cox

  • Does the Lord value me more than creation?
  • What are the things in my life I must sacrifice to declare how I value Him?

Prayer - Father, Your power amazes me! When I gaze into the stars and see Your creation I am overwhelmed at Your power, but awe-struck by Your love for me. Create in me a heart that craves You, and passionately longingly lives in light of Your holiness! Thank You for Your infinite power and Your incredible care for me! In Jesus’ name, Amen.
