Judges 11:1-17    

Jephthah was looked down upon, considered a "low life" and run out of town by his half brothers. But when the situation back home turned bad, the elders of Gilead (who didn't care one bit about Jephthah previously) changed their tune, reaching out to Jephthah because they believed he was their only hope of defeating the Ammonites. That turned out to be a good move. Jephthah was not only a mighty warrior, he was also wise in his approach and dealings with the king of the Ammonites.
