As we come to Luke 22, we are now very close to Jesus' betrayal and crucifixion. I tried to imagine the atmosphere and setting in which this passage was taking place. The Passover, an incredibly significant Jewish feast, is near, yet the Jewish leaders and Judas aren't focused on remembering, honoring and celebrating God's love for, and deliverance of, Israel at all. Instead they are focused on, and literally consumed by, sinful thoughts and actions.
Although the situation portrayed here is a sad one, it was good for me to read because it served as a reminder of what can happen when we take my eyes off of God, even briefly.
