Adding Your Name to the List
Now the rest of the people—the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the Nethinim, and all those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, everyone who had knowledge and understanding––>Nehemiah 10:28-29
Nehemiah had the people agree to the covenant and they placed their own seal on the document––amazing! They all understood that by adding their seal, they had agreed to enter into an oath of obedience to God. If God’s Word was not obeyed, then His chastening would come instead of His blessings. This is exactly what Moses had told them in Deuteronomy 28:1-2:
“… if you diligently obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments which I command you today, that the Lord your God will set you high above all nations of the earth. And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, because you obey the voice of the Lord your God:”
Moses continued to elaborate on all the blessings of obedience (Deuteronomy 28:3-14). Then the children of Israel were warned of the consequences of not obeying the Lord:
“But it shall come to pass, if you do not obey the voice of the Lord your God, to observe carefully all His commandments and His statutes which I command you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you” (Deuteronomy 28:15).
Moses, from Deuteronomy 28:16-68, described to the people the awful results of their willful disobedience. Sadly, God’s Word had come to pass; God’s people had experienced captivity. Other nations now despised them, as they had to serve these foreign people. Interestingly, we all have to serve somebody. Do you want to serve the Lord or serve your flesh?
Do you not know that to whom you present yourselves slaves to obey, you are that one’s slaves whom you obey, whether of sin leading to death, or of obedience leading to righteousness?
