Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God

For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. - Isaiah 9:6

Today is the day when unto us a Child was born and unto us a Son was given. A small baby was born in the town of Bethlehem and upon His shoulder rested the government, but really the whole world. Upon His shoulders, the salvation of all men rested.

He came to us an innocent Child and yet He would be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father and Prince of Peace. What an incredible thing to say about a baby. What an amazing prophecy about the coming Savior.

Imagine what Mary was thinking when she held her baby, while staying in an animal’s manger in the small town of Bethlehem. Remember, she knew who He was. The angel Gabriel came to reveal God’s plan: He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David (Luke 1:32).

Mary not only knew God’s Word and His prophecies, but Gabriel told her she was favored by God and she would conceive a child by the Holy Spirit. When she was holding the baby Jesus, I think she was thinking about all Gabriel revealed to her and she was amazed. How could this defenseless child hold so much responsibility? It was only because He was God. Through His willingness to be obedient to the Father’s plan, salvation for all men came to the earth as an innocent babe. Today, we can rejoice in the salvation of the Lord!

The hinge of history is on the door of a Bethlehem stable.
