Inquire of the Lord

It happened after this that David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I go up to any of the cities of Judah?” And the Lord said to him, “Go up.” David said, “Where shall I go up?” And He said, “To Hebron.” - 2 Samuel 2:1

I like that word to inquire. In the Hebrew, the word is sha'al. It means, “to seek, to ask for, to consult, to beg.” That is a pretty neat word; David was seeking God’s direction for his life. He did not want to go forward or move backward without the guidance of the Lord, so he inquired of Him.

What is so cool is that we can inquire of the Lord. We can come before the Lord in prayer at any time, seeking His wisdom and guidance for our lives. When we talk about prayer, what is prayer? Prayer is fellowship with God, communion with God.

The problem today is that, many times, we get up in the morning, brush our teeth, get dressed, get our coffee and we are on our way. How do we open the door, get in our cars and go when we have not spent time communing with God. That is our first priority. Second priority is reading of the Word of God! You have to put the sword on. Our third priority is fellowship.

Prayer is not a suggestion for our lives. When the 3000 people were baptized with the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:41, it says: And they continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.

That is how we grow closer to the Lord and stay close to Him—we seek Him.

Prayer should be fundamental, not supplemental.
