Defeat in Pride

Then Abner said to Joab, “Let the young men now arise and compete before us.” And Joab said, “Let them arise.” So they arose and went over by number, twelve from Benjamin, followers of Ishbosheth the son of Saul, and twelve from the servants of David. And each one grasped his opponent by the head and thrust his sword in his opponent’s side; so they fell down together. Therefore that place was called the Field of Sharp Swords, which is in Gibeon. So there was a very fierce battle that day, and Abner and the men of Israel were beaten before the servants of David - >2 Samuel 2:14-17

Look at Abner’s attitude. He brought his man up to Gibeon aggressively and said, “Hey, let’s have our young men compete.” He was so sure they would beat David’s men, but he was in for a big surprise.

Look what happened. Twelve men of Benjamin and twelve of David’s men were killed instantly. They got on the field and they thrust their swords into each other. It was over in minutes, but then all the men of war got up and started fighting. In the end, David’s men defeated Ishbosheth’s men.

Abner, in his pride, caused the death of so many men. He thought his men would defeat David’s men, so he threw down the challenge to Joab. His pride was his defeat. He was defeated before the fight even began, because God preserved David’s men, not for Joab but for David.

We need to follow godly leaders, or be godly leaders. Do not be the cause of someone’s defeat, because you are full of pride instead of the Holy Spirit.

Pride was the sin that changed angels into devils.
