Week 32

Haters Gonna Hate, So Sayeth Me

Whoever heeds discipline shows the way to life, but whoever ignores correction leads others astray. Proverbs 10:17

Constructive criticism = fine. But unwarranted, unhelpful reproof? Not so much.
Abe Lincoln shut out unconstructive criticism and distractions to accomplish the task at hand: “If I...listen to every criticism, let alone act on them, then this shop may as well be closed for all other businesses. I...do my best, and if the end result is good, then I do not care for any criticism, but if the end result is not good, then even the praise of ten angels would not make the difference.” Criticized for his looks, lack of education, and lowly upbringing, he taught that we mustn’t let the critics get us down or rob us of our confidence. He said, “It’s nothing but a noise!’”

Push past that noise.

Remember: unjust critics tear down; they don’t create. It’s easier to criticize than to lead. Teddy Roosevelt wrote: “It is not the critic who counts.... The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena...who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes up short again and again...but...who spends himself for a worthy cause; who at best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly....”

Dare greatly! Spend yourself for a worthy cause!
