VITAL SIGNS: Unity is driven the ministry of the Spirit | 1 Corinthians 2:4-10 | Devotional
1 Corinthians 2:4-10 My message and my preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but with a demonstration of the Spirit's power, so that your faith might not rest on men's wisdom, but on God's power. We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. No, we speak of God's secret wisdom, a wisdom that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began. None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. However, as it is written: "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love him" but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.
Let’s face it…the whole message of the cross has a sense of mystery, doesn’t it? How can a man…ok, someone who was fully-God and fully-man…die on a cross two-thousand years ago and place me into an eternal relationship with the living God? Remember what Paul said right before this passage? The message of the cross is a stumbling block to the Jew, and down-right foolishness to the Gentile (non-Jews). The combined response: You’ve got to be kidding! What makes us see the whole thing differently?
Check out 2:10 in our passage. The difference? “God has revealed [the message of the cross] to us by his Spirit.” The power of God for salvation is something you can’t see with your eyes, or understand when you hear it, or even comprehend it in your highest thought. It is a “secret wisdom,” a “mystery.” This does not refer to something mystifying and confusing. It describes a truth that God has known about from eternity past…a truth that destined us for glory before time began. We can’t understand it with our mere human minds; otherwise, men would not have put Jesus on the cross.
But enter the Holy Spirit. He opens our eyes to see. He allows us to hear. He explains the message of the cross. Our faith does not rest on the words or reasoning of man. It is by the power of God that we can believe!
Father, thank you for opening my eyes to see the sacrifice that you made for me. Thank you for opening my ears to hear the message of the cross. Thank you for opening my mind to understand your gracious gift of salvation. Thank you for your saving power in my life. In Christ’s Name I pray, Amen.
