VITAL SIGNS: Unity is driven the ministry of the Spirit | 1 Corinthians 2:11-16 | Devotional
1 Corinthians 2:11-16
For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The spiritual man makes judgments about all things, but he himself is not subject to any man's judgment: "For who has known the mind of the Lord that he may instruct him?"
So you and I set up a meeting to discuss a serious issue. We meet for lunch in a café or in my office. Our discussion may last an hour or longer, and we may talk about some pretty serious stuff. But in our time together, I will not know all your thoughts and you will not know all of mine. No one can know the “thoughts of a man except the man’s spirit within him.” It’s the same with God.
Only the Spirit of God knows the thoughts of God. But here is where it gets very cool. It’s the Spirit of God who lives within every believer. It’s the Spirit that explains to us God’s thoughts as we read His word. The Spirit is our personal Mentor “expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.” The man who has not trusted in Christ does not have that divine advantage. Things of God, including God’s Word, appear foolishness to him. You cannot have spiritual discernment without the Spirit of discernment.
This truth (called the doctrine of illumination) does not mean we know everything, or that we don’t need teachers, or that we don’t need to work hard in the study of Scripture. It simply means that as we read and study God’s Word, the Holy Spirit living within each believer will teach us spiritual truths. So every time you open God’s Word, ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes that you may see wonderful things from his Word (Psalms 119:18).
Father, that is my prayer today. In the words of the Psalmist, open my eyes that I may see wonderful things from your Word. In Jesus Name, Amen.
