There's An App For That: How Do I Get Rid of Fear and Worry? | Matthew 6:31-32

Matthew 6:31-32
So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

How Do I Get Rid of Fear and Worry? Trust God to give me all I need.

Some of the happiest Christians I have ever met live in Nairobi’s Marthare slums. Life in a ten-by-ten dirt floor shanty keeps things simple; life in a day-by-day existence keeps one dependent. Three meals a day? Maybe one… a plate of rice and, if you’re lucky, some beans. A closet full of clothes? Whatever you are wearing at the time. Grocery stores? Food sold from shanties and on the street.

It’s crazy, but sometimes worry is the result of blessing. We live in nice homes, drive late model cars, and wear fashionable clothes. Oddly enough, the more we have, the more we have to fret about. There is always something to do on our home. Cars need maintained and repaired. And our teenage daughters are mortified if their fashionable clothes aren’t fashionable enough.

Whether we are worried if we will eat or where we will eat; if we will have clothes or if our clothes are the “right” ones; these are the things, whether in the slum or the suburbs that “pagans run after.” We must learn day-by-day dependence…and that’s hard when our stomachs, refrigerators, closets, and pocketbooks are full.

Father, forgive us for finding things to worry about while surrounded by such great blessings. Help us to learn day-to-day dependence, even while we live in plenty. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
