Reflecting the Glory | 1 John 1:9 | Devotional

1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

When we become a Christian, the penalty of sin is paid for in full. We are a child of God and will forever be. That’s our position. At the same time, sin is not eliminated from our life. Christians do not live under sin’s penalty. Christians do live in the flesh in the world. The penalty of sin is gone; the propensity to sin remains.

1 John 1:9 is the believer’s great promise. When we acknowledge our sin before our Father, he will forgive us. He will clean up our heart. Our position as his child is never in question. But sin interrupts our relationship. When we confess our sins to him, that relationship will be restored.

Confession leads to forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration—all because of the finished work of Christ. Maybe there is some sin you and I need to confess to the Father. In fact, I am sure of it.

Father, thank you for this great promise. Thank you for forgiveness, cleansing, and restoration. Thank you for taking away the barriers that keep us from following hard after you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
