The Journey with Ron Moore

Reflecting the Glory | John 4:10 | Devotional

John 4:10
Jesus answered her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water."

She came to the well alone, her solitude a picture of inner loneliness. Five times she stood with a man and said, “I do.” Each relationship ended when he said, “I don’t.” Time after time she was put out on the street in a day when divorce proceedings consisted of one word “Out!” Broken and needy, she was caught in a vicious cycle. Now she was in another relationship, this time skipping the ceremony and vows.

She came to the well alone and Jesus engaged her loneliness. The well water was but an object lesson. A gift was waiting to fill her empty heart. Living water was available to quench her deep thirst. Note that Jesus did not require her to clean out the past baggage. He did not lecture her on the sin of immorality. He did not instruct her to go back home and put her broken life back together. He offered her the gift of living water.

Many people stay far from God thinking that they need to get their life in order before approaching him. They mistakenly believe that God only accepts us when we have our spiritual act together. But the reality is we can’t fix ourselves. God waits for the broken and empty. In fact, that’s the only way to come to Him. Only the living water that He provides can cleanse the sin-stained heart.

Father, thank you for accepting empty people. Thank you for the living water that cleanses our heart and quenches our thirst. Help us to understand that You alone restore broken lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
