Community: What Does It Look Like? | Ephesians 5:33 | Devotional

Ephesians 5:33 However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.

In marriage and family, the most basic and powerful community exists. In order for a church community to be strong, the community that exists in the walls of a home must provide the foundational fiber. And, of course, for the home to be strong, the wife and husband must carry out their responsibilities, but never independently of each other.

The husband is to love his wife as he loves himself. Love for self is not a clinical case of narcissism. Love for self involves getting something to eat when we are hungry, getting some sleep when we are tired, getting some exercise, taking care of our body, going to the doctor when we are sick, etc. Paul is being very practical. The same things we do to take care of ourselves, we should do for our wives. When a husband only takes care of his needs, then it is a case of narcissism.

Wives are to love their husbands too. But here Paul focuses on respect. When you respect a person you hold them in high esteem and honor them. You demonstrate their worth by your words and actions. You allow them to be the spiritual leader that God intended them to be.

Father, help us realize that community begins in the home with us. May we carry out the roles you have assigned so we can be the strong family community that you desire. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
