Reflecting the Glory | Matthew 14:29-31 | Devotional

Matthew 14:29-31
“Come," he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

When the disciples saw a figure walking across the water in the middle of the night, they thought a ghost was coming after them and “cried out in fear.” I would have too. But the “ghost” was Jesus and he comforted them with these words: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” That’s when Peter said, “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” And Jesus said, “Come.” Amazingly Peter defied nature and walked on the water, that is, until he realized that he was defying nature by walking on water. The sight of the wind and waves filled him with fear and a literal sinking feeling.

Circumstances are always bigger than we are. The winds of broken relationships, difficult family matters, unfulfilled dreams, job loss, mounting bills, grief, depression blow hard and their waves crash against us. We feel ourselves going under by the force that pushes hard against us. When our focus shifts from the Lord and to our situation, we begin to sink. That’s when it’s time for the Peter Prayer.

The Peter Prayer is not long. It contains no Christian clichés. It is a cry for help from a person going down. It comes from the lips of a doubter whose heart is emptied of faith. But as he did with Peter, Jesus will reach out his hand to catch you. Feel yourself going under? Whisper the prayer…

Lord, save me.
