Looking for a Hiding Place? | Psalm 139:1-6

Psalm 139:1-6
For the director of music. Of David. A psalm.
You have searched me, LORD, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, LORD, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.

Have you ever tried to hide from God? Sometimes it’s tempting, isn’t it? We try to find a dark place where no one can see our actions. We snuggle up in an emotional corner to stroke our secrets. We head for a mental open range where our thoughts can run free. However, we can never hide from God.

In the opening verses of Psalm 139, David proclaims God’s omniscience. He knows everything there is to know about everything there is to know. Whether I am sitting still or on the move, whether I am far from home or in my bed, God is “familiar with all my ways.” My words never take him by surprise. I can’t escape the One who surrounds me on all sides.

How should I respond to God’s all-knowing nature? The person of God is “too wonderful for me,” “too lofty for me to attain.” He knows me inside and out. He has my back. He will never let me out of his sight. I will never be out of his mind. He will carry me all the way to eternity. I can respond to such a Person only in humble worship. There is no need to hide from God.

Father, today is the day that I stop trying to hide from you. I stand open, bare and vulnerable. Search me and show me my sin. Help me to repent. I worship you alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
