The Journey with Ron Moore

Hello, My Name is ... God | 2 Chronicles 16:9

2 Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war."

This past weekend, we finally got around to watching the movie Invictus. Directed by Clint Eastwood, the movie portrays Nelson Mandela’s desire to unify his country using rugby. Throughout the movie, Mandela (played by Morgan Freeman) quotes William Ernest Henley’s well-known words from his poem with the same title as the movie—“I am the master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.” Judah’s king Asa would have loved that poem.

Caught in a bind with Israel’s king, Asa struck a deal with the king of Aram and used the foreign alliance to force Israel’s withdraw. God was not pleased that Asa refused to trust in him and laid out the consequences—“You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.” Three years after the alliance, Asa was afflicted with a disease in his feet. “Though the disease was severe, even in his illness he did not seek help from the Lord, but only from physicians” (2 Chronicles 16:12). Two years later Asa died—the master of his fate and the captain of his soul (but they did make a “huge fire in his honor” - big deal).

No one can hide from El Roi—the God who sees. His eyes search the whole earth, looking for those “whose hearts are fully committed to him.” He desires to give us the strength we need to complete his assignment for us. You can’t hide from God. You don’t want to hide from God. He desires to give you everything you need in order to do what he has called you to do. God sees and delivers on his promises.

Father, thank you for never taking your eyes off us. Thank you for giving us everything we need to do what you have called us to do. There are so many things that we are tempted to trust. Help us to trust in you alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
