Community: Why Me? | Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 | Devotional
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!
While the essence of community is found in God (One God in three Persons), the expression of community is found in man. That’s why God looked at Adam, standing by himself, and said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.”
Allen Ross says it this way in his commentary Creation and Blessing:
The man was thus created in such a way that he needs the help of a partner. Or we may say that human beings cannot fulfill their destiny except in mutual assistance.
Our passage today is not simply addressing the need to go hiking or mountain climbing in pairs. Two are better than one because “man was…created in such a way that he needs the help of a partner” in all aspects of life. Two are better than one because “human beings cannot fulfill their destiny except in mutual assistance.“
Lord, please don’t let us live life alone. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
