God’s Design for the Family | Genesis 2:24

Genesis 2:24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Marriage has always been God’s idea. He created man and woman and placed them together in a garden. God’s instructions for this relationship are the only ones that will work. Yesterday we considered what it means to “leave” father and mother. Today let’s consider the meaning of “united.”

The Hebrew word translated “united to” means “to stick to something,” “to grasp something and not let go.” In Scripture it is used to describe the skin clinging to the bones. It is used of a warrior who has fought so long and hard that his hand is frozen to (united to) his sword. When used to describe a relationship, this word speaks to a lifelong commitment. Jesus said, “Therefore what God has joined together, let no man separate” (Mark 10:9).

Questions to consider:

1. Are you taking your vows of marriage seriously? 2. Is ending the commitment (divorce) an option? 3. Are you committed to your husband/wife for better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health, as long as you both shall live?

Questions for young adults:

1. Do you believe marriage is a lifelong commitment? 2. Are you committed to marriage as long as you both shall love or as long as you both shall live? 3. Are you willing to care for the person you plan to marry even in physical illness, mental illness or disability?

Father, help us to take vows we voluntarily say before you very seriously. Give us the courage of commitment. Give us the strength to stick . . . no matter what. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
