Hiding in a Cave | Psalm 57:1-5

Todayís Passage: Psalm 57:1-5
Key Verse: Psalm 57:1

For the director of music. To the tune of ìDo Not Destroy.î Of David. A miktam. When he had fled from Saul. into the cave.
Have mercy on me, my God, have mercy on me, for in you I take refuge. I will take refuge in the shadow of your wings until the disaster has passed.

When David was a young boy the prophet Samuel anointed him with oil and whispered in his ear, ìYou will be the next king of Israel.î However, the jealous King Saul did not accept the message. He chased David around the countryside intent on killing him. More than once David found refuge in a mountain cave.

Although the cave provided temporary security, David confessed that his refuge was in God alone. He was determined to stay under the protective shadow of Godís ìwings until the disaster has passed.î Living in the midst of lions and ravenous beasts, David cried out to God. He was confident that God would deliver him.

Have you moved to the safety of your ìcaveî? Are you hiding to protect your emotions, your heart? Is someone or something chasing you and you feel like you need to retreat to your ìmountainous cavernî in order to survive? Letís turn Davidís prayer into a personal prayer for you.

Lord, I have retreated to a hiding place, but I know that only you can provide help and protection. You alone are my refuge. Please have mercy on my situation (tell your situation to God). Someone or something trying to destroy me surrounds me. I cry out to you ó God Most High! Please use this situation to fulfill your purposes in my life. Surround me with your love and faithfulness. Be honored in this circumstance. I am depending on you. In Jesusí name. Amen.
