Family Under Attack | Deuteronomy 6:4-9

Deuteronomy 6:4-9 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.

I am pretty sure that I don’t need to cite examples of television shows, legislative rulings, statistics on divorce, magazine articles about prominent gay couples and society’s heroes living together before marriage to prove to you that the family is under attack. It’s easy to roll our eyes and give long “holy” sighs and ask, “What is this world coming to?” It’s much harder to actually do something about it.

God’s call to action is very clear. Quit philosophizing on the state of the world and do something about the state of your heart and the hearts of your family members. Today’s passage, called the Shema (from the Hebrew word “hear”), is a call to arms; a call to action. Israelites that were serious about their relationship with God recited this passage daily. This week let’s consider this as a personal and family confession of faith.

Hear, O Israel: The Lord is our God, the Lord is one. A life that counts for eternity begins with a personal relationship with our personal Father without competition. We cannot put other “gods” before our God. We must demonstrate to our spouses and our children that our god is not our homes, cars, recreation activities, careers or ourselves. What decisions will you make today to prove that other “gods” are not competing with the Lord?

Father, talk is cheap. Waxing eloquently about the state of the world requires no action or personal change. Wake us up! You desire demonstrated obedience. Help us to demonstrate that you are God alone and there is no competition. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
